Portrait of a Child

What is CSE?

CSE is the sexual exploitation of children and young people under the age of 18.

The victim of exploitation can receive items such as food, accommodation, drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, affection, gifts and money, to name a few, as a result of them taking part in sexual activities.

Child sexual exploitation can occur through the use of technology without the child’s immediate comprehension, a typical example is the victim is persuaded to post sexual images on the internet or mobile phone.

In all cases, traffickers have a controlling power over their victims by virtue of their age, gender, intellect, physical strength, financial position or relationship. Violence, coercion and intimidation are common and exploitative relationships are generally characterised by the victim's vulnerability and limited ability to choose.
